At Amedisys, we believe compassionate care should know no boundaries, including those surrounded by water. That’s why Beacon Hospice, an Amedisys company, in Bangor, Maine, is proud to announce its expansion to serve patients on North Haven Island for the first time.
A Journey Fueled by Purpose
Bringing hospice care to this remote island is no small feat. The journey requires a ferry, careful logistics, and flexibility in the face of unpredictable coastal weather. Hospice Case Manager Miles Rogals, RN, has embraced the challenge with characteristic commitment.
"When I first heard we might have a patient on North Haven, I thought, ‘How are we going to swing that?’” says Miles. “But at Amedisys, we don’t let barriers stop us. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow — land, sea, or air — we find a way to help where we’re needed.”
His dedication shows in the way he approaches every visit.
“It’s not just about making the trip,” Miles says. “It’s about showing up with the same level of care and attention we give any other patient, no matter how far off the mainland they are.”
Strategic Planning, Passionate Execution
The decision to expand wasn’t made lightly. Katie Pearl, RN, Director of Operations, explains the thoughtful planning that went into making North Haven service a reality.
“We had to consider everything from the financial implications of weekly ferry rides to the availability of a dedicated nurse,” Katie says. “We’ve talked for years about serving this community, and I’m thrilled we’re finally doing it.”
She emphasizes that the project reflects what makes the Amedisys team unique.
“What really stands out is the team’s willingness to adapt and invest in something new for the right reasons, because it’s the right thing to do for these patients and families.”
Community Connection and Gratitude
The reception from the North Haven community has been overwhelmingly positive. Charla Burnett, RN, LSW, Hospice Social Worker, says island residents have welcomed hospice with open arms.
“People here go above and beyond to support one another,” says Charla. “One person even recognized our name badge on the mainland and thanked us for caring for his friend on the island. That speaks volumes.”
Charla sees the island as an extension of the larger community Amedisys serves.
“Providing care on North Haven is a privilege,” she adds. “To know we’re making a difference somewhere that’s been underserved — that’s incredibly rewarding.”
Thanks to the dedication of our hospice team, the gift of hospice now reaches even further—off the coast and into the heart of North Haven.
